Biography

I grew up in a 25 acre garden in Pinehurst North Carolina. The Clarendon gardens was open to the public 365 days a year. My parents created this garden and a nursery which specialized in Ilex, Camellias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons. The Ilex were gathered from all over the world. My formal education was in Liberal Arts, Horticulture and Landscape Design. I began drafting Landscape Plans in my early twenties when I worked for Clarendon Gardens in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Through out my life I have traveled extensively, and studied garden design in America, England and Scotland.

In 1972-75 I accepted the challenge of re-designing the 5 acre gardens surrounding the American Ambassador’s residence in Ankara, Turkey. I have been in business as Gardens by Design since 1975.
I specialize in listening to the needs, desires and concerns of each client, and develop a working relationship to create a clear concept for every property. This unique approach ensures the clientele of individual designs. I am sensitive to the functional relationships, as well as the aesthetic concerns of each site. I believe each Garden is a living art form. Unlike Architecture, paintings or sculpture, the form created continues to evolve with time. In keeping with the times, I now use current technology to advance my practice of Landscape Design. Computer Aided Drafting software speeds design work and cuts the cost to the client in half.

The design concept is created by focusing on the functional relationships of the residence to the site. By listing to the clients, and understanding their desires and special needs, I create original gardens that will be enjoyed for generations. A vast personal library allows easy reference to particular garden designs. Whether your personal taste is for Traditional English Gardens or the Far East, I learned about APLD from Andy White APLD in 1998 while attending a lighting seminar in Greensboro North Carolina. I immediately called for information. I was the 188th Landscape Designer to be certified by APLD in 1998.

I believe a good designer must be sensitive to the functional relationships, as well as the aesthetic concerns of each site. I think of each Garden, is a living art form. Unlike Architecture, paintings or sculpture, the form created continues to evolve with time. It is important to keep balance and harmony to achieve true beauty. Repetition is the secret to creating a successful garden. Recurring patterns in plant material and ornamentation will make for an emotionally and visually satisfying garden where one will enjoy sitting. I specialize in listening to the needs, desires and concerns of each client, and develop a working relationship to create a clear concept for every property. This unique approach ensures the clientele of individual designs.
